Springfield, Ill. — City, Water, Light and Power’s Energy Services Office is part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ongoing “We’re for Water” campaign, which strives to educate consumers about the importance of water efficiency. As part of this campaign, CWLP is recognizing Fix a Leak Week to encourage its water customers to help reduce household water waste each year. “Leaks can easily account for more than 10,000 gallons of water lost in an average home each year,” said Todd LaFountain, CWLP’s Water Division Manager. “Making easy corrections to fix leaks, such as faulty toilet flappers and dripping faucets, could equate to a 10 percent bill savings and also preserve the city’s water resources.”
To help save water for the future, CWLP is asking its customers to check, twist, and replace fixtures, connections, and pipes.
- Check for leaks: Look for dripping faucets, showerheads, and fixture connections. Also, check toilets for silent leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring into the upper tank and seeing if it appears in the bowl before you flush. A toilet that leaks and flows continuously can waste over 100 gallons of water a day.
- Twist and tighten faucet connection: To save water without a noticeable difference in flow, twist on a WaterSense® labeled faucet aerator.
- Replace the fixture if necessary: For fixtures over 10 years old, consider replacing them with a new WaterSense® labeled model, which are independently tested and certified to use 20 percent less water and perform as well or better than standard models.
