Scammers are getting smarter, but so are our customers! Recently, we’ve received reports of a text message circulating that falsely claims to be from City Water, Light and Power (CWLP). These messages try to trick you into sharing personal information or making payments through unofficial channels.
Here’s what you need to know to stay safe:
- CWLP will never ask for payment or personal details through text messages. When it’s time to make a payment, only use our trusted methods—by phone, in person, by mail, online, or through your myCWLP.com account.
- Overpayments made towards your bill will be credited to your CWLP account or a check refund will be issued, never over the phone.
- If you’re ever unsure, please call us at 217.789.2030 and follow the prompts for payment or customer service.
- “Smishing” is a scam method used via text messaging to steal personal information or direct you to fraudulent websites. Unless you have opted in to receive CWLP text alerts, we will not text you about billing or payments.
- Scammers posing as utility workers or contractors may knock on your door claiming to inspect meters or perform repairs. CWLP or authorized contractors schedule visits in advance. Always verify before allowing anyone access to your home.
- Free energy audits, water pressure checks, or efficiency inspections are not affiliated with CWLP unless you’ve been notified or initiated the request. Do not let them inside without confirmation.
- Claims of a gas or water leak nearby by an unknown individual who insists they must enter your home. This is often a distraction scam to steal valuables or gather information. CWLP would always contact you in advance before entering your property for any safety inspection.
- Fake emails may look like legitimate CWLP bills, complete with logos and color schemes. Never click on links or attachments unless you’ve confirmed the sender. CWLP sends bills by mail unless you’ve opted in to paperless billing.
Remember: Don’t give in to high-pressure tactics, and never share private information with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly. If something feels off, it probably is. Always contact your utility provider directly before taking any action.
Protect Yourself and Stay Scam-Savvy. To keep yourself safe, remember these three rules:
HANG UP on suspicious phone calls.
SHUT THE DOOR on impostors posing as utility workers.
DELETE any suspicious emails or text messages.
When in doubt, please verify before acting. Contact CWLP directly at 217-789-2030, or visit myCWLP.com for account questions, billing options, or service support.
