Every drop of water that flows from your tap represents hours of work, expertise, and dedication. CWLP’s Water Department at Water Distribution and Engineering oversee the final delivery of water before it reaches your tap. From the source water at Lake Springfield, to the Water Plant for treatment, the purified water makes its way to storage tanks and through the utility’s water distribution system to reach all the residents, businesses and organizations of Springfield.
CWLP water distribution operations are under the purview of Mike Johnson, the General Superintendent of Water Engineering & Distribution. Mike manages 50 employees at their facility located at 401 N. 11th Street. His staff includes water distribution supervisors, engineering staff, field crews, troubleshooters, locators, storeroom personnel, and dispatchers.
In the Water Distribution System there are 775 miles of water main, 7,300 fire hydrants, 17,500 valves and over 55,200 service connections to maintain. Water Distribution personnel not only maintain the existing infrastructure but also design and install water main extensions, water main replacements, and new water services all in house. This department is available 24-7 to assure all customers have safe and reliable water service year after year.
Mike said he has a lot of pride in the Water Department’s work ethic and commitment. “I am very proud of the group of employees here at the Water Department. We have a huge responsibility, and we take that very seriously. Everyone plays an important role to consistently deliver a reliable and high-quality product to our customers. At all hours of the day and under the most severe weather conditions, our team is committed to continue to provide the highest level of service possible. “
Mike graduated from Marquette University with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He is a licensed Professional Engineer and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Public Water Supply Operator. He has been with the Water Department for over 15 years and has almost 25 years of water distribution and engineering experience.
