CWLP CREWS NEARING COMPLETION OF WATER MAIN REPAIR

August 28, 2026

Precautionary boil order being issued for six customers;
road repair work scheduled.

Springfield, Ill. — City Water, Light and Power (CWLP) Water Division crews are completing repairs to a 24-inch transmission water main that failed Thursday evening near 5th and Monroe Streets. The break occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m., and crews are replacing a 20- foot section of the main. Repairs are expected to be completed before 12 a.m. tonight.

As a precaution, CWLP is issuing a boil order for six customers on 5th Street between Monroe and Adams Streets. Affected customers will be notified directly. The boil order is expected to remain in effect until at least Sunday morning. Customers should follow the instructions provided in their notification.

“We’re grateful for the quick response and coordination among CWLP, Public Works and our other city teams,” said Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher. “Everyone is working together to minimize the disruption for residents and businesses and get the area safely restored.”

CWLP Water Division Manager Todd LaFountain said crews and partner departments responded quickly and effectively.
“Our teams acted fast and worked together to manage a significant break and keep the repair process moving safely and efficiently,” LaFountain said. “We appreciate the support from all departments involved.”

CWLP Electric Division crews restored electric service to all customers in the impacted area at approximately 2 p.m. Friday.

The water main failure damaged portions of the roadway and surrounding infrastructure. Public Works is overseeing road repairs and conducting additional sewer inspections to determine whether further damage occurred.

Monroe Street between 4th and 5th streets is expected to remain closed for approximately two weeks while road repairs are completed. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Water customers with questions or issues to report can contact CWLP Water Dispatch at 217 789 2323, ext. 2.
