Under the Illinois Community Charging Program, CWLP was awarded funding to deploy 40 EV charging ports across 9 sites, advancing Springfield's infrastructure to support clean transportation options. Installations will be completed by March 2026 and represent a pilot for CWLP's first charging infrastructure project and are expected to be among the first going in service in Illinois under this grant. Hanson Professional Services is doing the design and installation work for 240-volt Level 2 chargers capable of delivering 25 to 35 miles of range per hour of charge.
The project budget is $786,000 and the grant award is covering $629,000. Funding to the Illinois Community Charging Program comes from a $15 million federal award to the Illinois Finance Authority under the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Discretionary Grant Program.
Criteria for funding for this grant required locations that would only need minimal infrastructure upgrades to keep costs low and ensure speedy deployment. Geolocation analysis of driving patterns was also used to select charging sites where usage is most likely.
